OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE
There is humility in honoring that as physicians we do not heal. That is, physicians practice medicine with an intention to facilitate healing. Multiple healthcare professionals earn the title of Doctor, including Medical Doctors (MD), Doctors of Osteopathy (DO), Naturopathic Doctors (ND), Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) and Doctors of Oriental Medicine (DOM). Each of these professions yields insight to disease from a different point of view and training. Osteopathy is an approach to health that values the study, evaluation, and application of structure and function.
The mindset of Osteopathy is:
“If you move better, you heal better.”
Structure and function are viewed as one entity. In unifying structure and function and honoring the unity of the systems of the body, Osteopathy appreciates the connectedness of the whole body. Osteopathic Manual Medicine (OMM) is the application of structure and function as it encompasses a spectrum of techniques that employ the laws of physics and physiology to improve the health of the body. OMM treats restrictions in vasculature, nerves, muscles, ligaments, lymphatic fluid, joints and skin. Each of these anatomical structures supports each other, thus all structures are evaluated and treated comprehensively. Improving anatomical structure and optimizing physiological function facilitates health and healing.
